Letter to the Editor

I work as a direct care worker in Mount Vernon Developmental Center for individuals with profound developmental disabilities. I love my work and am very proud of all that I have accomplished in my career. I am also very proud to be a member of a labor union, which has empowered me to pursue this career and put two kids through college in the process.

Several years ago, lawmakers in Ohio attempted to weaken workers’ rights to form strong unions. It was called Senate Bill 5 and was voted down by the voters of Ohio by a 2 to 1 margin. But those attempts to take away our freedoms have not stopped. Now, extreme state lawmakers have introduced six resolutions to again try to weaken workers’ rights and make Ohio a Right to Work state. And a Supreme Court case called Janus vs. AFSCME Council 31 seeks to make the entire country “Right to Work” for public sector unions.

That’s why on Feb. 24, I will join workers from around this great state for a largescale rally at the Statehouse in Columbus to defend the freedoms that come with being in a union: freedom from want, freedom from hate, freedom to vote, and freedom to join together in strong unions.

We’re standing up and fighting for the freedom to come together and fight for fair pay for our work, affordable health care, safe workplaces, vibrant communities and a secure future for all of us.
